Based on the top-end Ertiga GX variant, Indomobil Suzuki presented a concept version named ‘Suzuki Ertiga Sporty‘ at the Indonesian International Motor Show 2013 (IIMS 2013).

The Ertiga Sporty is designed to turn eyeballs of show goers and may not have a stint on the market.

At last year’s edition of the show, Suzuki had a few similar concepts on view, and so was the case at the Auto Expo. The reaction to these concept cars would be gauged and a production model, or a special edition version, can be planned using it. In most cases, these special editions are planned and executed in a partnership with a design agency and don’t have any role after the show is over.

The Suzuki Ertiga Sporty has production-ready accessories such as projector headlamps, twin slat dull finish grille, new contrast front bumper, new foglights, redesigned air intake, brushed metal bumper insert, lip spoiler, side skirting, low profile tires shod on chrome plated rims, roof spoiler, new rear bumper with a faux diffuser, twin exhaust tips and chrome garnish above the number plate enclosure.

The Ertiga Sporty’s mechanicals are untouched. In Indonesia, the Ertiga is also available with a four-speed manual transmission, apart from the five speed manual. Just one engine option is offered – a 1.4L K Series petrol that develops 95PS of peak power and 130Nm of peak torque.

Spied – Mahindra Bolero Maxi Truck Plus CNG caught testing

In early May this year, the Mahindra Bolero Maxi Truck Plus was launched. The new Maxi Truck Plus saw the updated Bolero’s front fascia design and the new m2DICR engine powering it.

The ‘CNG’ on the front fender easily identifies this Maxi Truck Plus test mule.

MotorBash has now spied a CNG variant of the Maxi Truck Plus. The front fender of the pickup, which has CNG written on it, easily identifies the vehicle. There are no other changes to speak of as everything else is identical to the regular Maxi Truck Plus.

Mahindra’s current lineup in this segment includes the Maxi Truck Plus, the Maxi Truck and the Maxi Truck CNG. A CNG variant on the Truck Plus would complete their lineup of having two variants, each with two fuel types.

The Maxi Truck CNG (1,00kg payload capacity) is powered by a 2.5-liter engine producing 70hp and 180Nm of torque. The same powertrain is likely to carried forward to Truck Plus.

On the Maxi Truck Plus (1,150kg payload capacity), Mahindra also offered power steering as part of the optional equipment. The vehicle’s turning radius was reduced to 5.5m for improved maneuverability, while additional features such as engine immobilizer and a mobile phone charging point were added.

The Maxi Truck Plus has a cargo box 3.7 sq.m in area, measuring 2,500mm x 1,620mm x 458mm.

Mahindra also introduced a 1 year/unlimited km warranty on the Maxi Truck Plus.

Bentley to launch 2014 Flying Spur in India on October 1

The 2014 Bentley Flying Spur will be launched in India on October 1. The refreshed and updated luxury sedan was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show which was held in March.

The Flying Spur is the four-door luxury sedan based on the sporty Continental GT coupe. The 2014 model year sees some exterior changes. The roof line has been lowered and as a result, the drag coefficient has decreased to 0.29 Cd. At the rear, Bentley has changed the taillight design to a horizontally profiled “ellipse” design and have also incorporated LED technology.

The 2014 Bentley Flying Spur was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this year.

Overall, Bentley say that they have changed over 600 parts on the new Flying Spur and that the new model weights 50kg lesser than the outgoing version.

Inside, the leather on the seats are softer and come in a range of 12 colors. Bentley continue to offer four and five seat configurations on the 2014 model.

Two 10-inch LCDs at the rear, an eight-inch touchscreen interface at the front, a 1100 Watt sound system and a Wi-Fi hotspot exclusive to the car, are the various entertainment systems found on the new Flying Spur.

The taillights are now horizontally profiled and in an “elliptical” shape.

The Flying Spur gets its power from a 6.0-liter W12 TwinTurbocharged engine producing 616bhp and 800Nm of torque. A ZF 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. 0-100km/h takes 4.3 seconds while the top-speed is rated at 322km/h. Bentley says the Flying Spur will do 6.8km/l.

Taiwan – Fully revamped Mitsubishi Colt Plus launched

Mitsubishi just introduced a major redesign of the Mitsubishi Colt Plus station wagon in Taiwan. The car has been reskinned completely and the front-end receives a new bumper, grille and LED headlamps that are reminiscent of the Attrage.

The interior is a drastic redo with a more modern dashboard housing an infotainment system that provides satellite navigation and reads multimedia from USB, Auxiliary devices and via Bluetooth. New features on-board are reversing camera, heated seats, push button start, trip computer, keyless entry, multi-function steering wheel, automatic two-zone climate control and other features like dual airbags, ABS, BAS and EBD.

Under the hood is the most important change of them all. The five-seater is powered by a 1.5L engine replacing the previous 1.6L MIVEC. It develops healthy outputs of 112hp and 150Nm and is available only with a CVT with seven pre-set speeds. The mileage is rated at 18.9 kmpl.

The Colt Plus competes on the Taiwanese market with the Nissan Livina, Toyota Yaris, Honda Jazz, Nissan Micra and the Ford Fiesta. It is launched in four variants priced between 11.83 lakh rupees and 14.07 lakh rupees.

Report – Aston Martin ends production of the badge-engineered Cygnet

According to a report on Supercar Kids, Aston Martin has ended the production of the Cygnet, a badge-engineered Toyota iQ which was introduced to address quick city commutes of Aston’s elite customers.

When we say Aston Martin Cygnet, we actually mean Toyota iQ!

Production of the Aston Martin Cygnet began in 2011 and with its production coming to a close in 2013, this model, after the Virage, is an Aston with one of the shortest production spans. The Virage, introduced in 2011, was discontinued in 2012, after just a 1,000 units were made. The Cygnet, which also began its journey in 2011, now faces a dead end. 2011 isn’t a year that Aston would like to remember.

The interiors feature a hand-crafted leather upholstery and some Aston Martin badges.

The Cygnet may only be a grille away from an iQ, but the interior is made more luxurious with hand-crafted leather door trims and leather seats. The mechanicals are retained, with the trusty 1.33-liter Toyota petrol engine pumping out 97bhp and 125Nm, paired either to a 6-speed manual or a CVT gearbox.

According to an Aston Martin spokesperson, the Cygnet is in stock with dealers across the world. A Cygnet would set you back by about 35,000 Euros in Europe (29.57 lakh rupees).

Video walkaround – Honda Mobilio MPV at IIMS 2013

The Honda Mobilio was unveiled at the Indonesian auto show earlier this month and here’s an enthusiast video from Youtube. User Salim Wibowo has made a low-resolution video walkaround of the car. This is the first time we are getting to see the car on film as Honda hasn’t released official videos from the show.

The Mobilio may look like an Amaze or a Brio from the front, and that’s no coincidence. The MPV is based on the Brio platform and was developed by Honda’s engineering teams in Indonesia and Thailand to meet the low price MPV demand in ASEAN countries and India.

The Mobilio's wheelbase which stands at 2,650mm is 245mm longer than the Amaze. While the Amaze ducks under the 4m overall length barrier, the Mobilio measures an Ertiga-matching 4,390mm. Unlike the other two relatives, the roofline and the car, with a 185mm ground clearance, is 105mm taller than the Amaze.

Indonesia would be the launch market for the Mobilio. The car would be made at Honda’s new plant in West Java from next year onwards with a 1.5-liter petrol engine. Manual and automatic gearboxes would be available. When the car launches in India at a later stage next year, it will have the 1.5L diesel option too.

The Honda Mobilio will enter production next year in Indonesia.

There is a lot of commonality between the Amaze and the Mobilio in the interior department. The  dashboard is a carryover and so are the bucket seats. You can note from the video that even with the three rows of seats taking their usual places, there’s a considerable level of luggage space.

We expect the Mobilio to be present at the Auto Expo in Noida next year.

Report – BMW 1 Series sedan postponed to 2017

According to an article on, BMW has planned a 1 Series sedan, but it won’t arrive before 2017. The current 1 Series, which will diversify into a 2 Series next year, upgrades the convertible and coupe version into the higher series, while retaining the three- and five-door hatchbacks.

The entry-level sedan BMW is planning to rival the Audi A3 Sedan and the Mercedes CLA Class is part of a new family of front wheel drive models that begins with the new generation Mini which will launch at the LA Auto Show in November.

The next generation BMW 1 Series, which is expected in 2017, will be based on the front-wheel drive UKL platform.

The platform of the 2018 BMW 1 Series goes by the name UKL (Unter Klasse, or entry-level) and will also underpin the next generation BMW X1. Most of the lower segment BMW vehicles such as the 1 Series and 2 Series families, would be eventually on the UKL.

Codenamed NES (New Entry-level Sedan), a BMW insider says the car is “integral to BMW’s growth plans”. As sales of premium brand four-door saloons in China and US are increasing, this model is believed to be an important pillar to the company’s growth plans.

The four-door model is developed by BMW to support front-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive, the latter which is an option across its entire portfolio.

The 1 Series sedan will have to fight it out with the Audi A3 Sedan and the Mercedes CLA.

BMW is moving to the testing and development phase of the 1 Series sedan. Though a production site has not been decided yet, insiders believe that the model would be built in China, Brazil and Germany.

Engine options would include three- and four-cylinder direct-injection petrol and turbocharged diesel units. As a part of BMW’s EfficientDynamics initiative, a plug-in hybrid would be offered later in the car’s lifecycle.

2014 Tata Vista without ‘christmas tree’ taillights rendered

Regular readers would be aware that Tata Motors has commenced testing the 2014 Tata Vista. As part of their Horizonext strategy, Tata would be introducing a comprehensively refreshed Vista next year. We have seen camouflaged test mules on Pune roads and we have also shown you a spy shot of what could be the new front design of the hatchback.

Team BHP member AntlerRoad has now rendered the rear of the 2014 Vista. The major change happens to the taillights, which will no longer sport the ‘christmas-tree’ like arrangement, a design highlight that has been present on the Indica and Vista since their inceptions.

Instead, the lights are now grouped to the lower portion of the bootlid, which also sees a complete makeover. As for the space on either side of the rear windshield, which earlier had the brake lights, two blackened pillars have been placed.

The number plate holder has also been moved up from the bumper to the bootlid. To compensate for the extra space, the reflectors on the bumper seem newly designed. Based on the rendering here, it seems there are going to be extensive sheet metal changes in the refreshed Vista.

This could be the front of the new 2014 Vista.

However mechanically, the Vista will continue with the same set of engines – the 1.3-liter MultiJet engine in two states of tuning, a 1.2-liter petrol and maybe an upgraded BS4 compliant CR4 engine. Will Tata show the updated Vista at the 2014 Auto Expo in February next year?

VW Chairman reveals Ducati-powered XL1, to be called XL Sport

The VW XL1 celebrated its world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March this year. Touted to be the most fuel efficient car in the world, VW claims the XL1 can do 111km/l. However, the XL1 will not go into mass production, but will be a halo-car for the brand with a limited production run.

The XL Sport is the go-faster version of the XL1.

VW Chairman, Ferdinand Piëch has now revealed plans for a high-performance variant called the VW XL Sport. As Autorevue reports, the XL Sport would be the merger of two successful coups – a halo-car with an astronomical fuel efficiency claim and the buyout of a successful superbike company (Ducati).

Power for the XL Sport comes from the 1,200cc Ducati Panigale engine. The specifications stand at 190PS at 10,750rpm and 123.7Nm of torque at 9,000rpm. A double-clutch transmission would be used, all though the exact specifications of the gearbox, or even the type of drive was not mentioned. Thanks to the use of carbon-fiber components, the XL Sport would weigh a mere 795kg.

Power for the XL Sport would come from a Ducati Panigale engine.

Not too long ago, Indian Autos Blog reported that VW was considering such a high-performance version of the XL1, and we called it the XR1. We even showed you a rendering of what the XR1 could look like.

Given Mr. Piëch’s track record (with the development of the VW Phaeton and the buyout of Ducati), we certainly expect to see the XL Sport enter production, though maybe in limited units only.

Indonesia – Suzuki Ertiga diesel to be introduced not before 2015

Marketing Director of PT Indomobil Suzuki (Suzuki Indonesia) Davy Tulian spoke to Detik Oto on the sidelines of the IIMS 2013.

Tulian confirmed that there were no plans for a Suzuki Ertiga diesel for Indonesia at least until 2015.

These are Tulian’s exact words -

For us to meet gasoline demand alone is our job. Capacity of our factory (in Indonesia) is still limited, and is not enough for diesel production as well.

Readers would know that Maruti exports the Ertiga from Gurgaon to Indonesia as a CKD where it is put together at Suzuki’s Bekasi plant. Bekasi’s capacity was boosted to 7,000 units this year on the back of heavy demand. Suzuki officials had come on record earlier stating that they couldn’t realize the car’s complete sales potential due to supply shortage from India. The Ertiga still managed to finish in fourth position for countrywide sales in the first half of the year.

The Ertiga diesel variant would be made at Suzuki’s second factory in Tambun where they can be made without the need for cutting back on petrol variant production.

Come 2015, the assembly of the Ertiga would move to Suzuki’s second plant in Tambun. The new factory will raise the output of Suzuki cars in the country from 149k units at present to 250k units. This plant is currently producing the Wagon R which meets the government’s LCGC policy (Low Cost Green Car policy) that waives luxury taxes on fuel efficient vehicles. The diesel version would be made at this site.

Tulian explains -

If now we are to necessitate the production of diesel Ertiga, we should be investing in factories, spare parts, sales, etc. Since we don’t have extra capacity, we should cut gasoline production, and divert that volume to make the diesel. So we have to wait until our new plant (in Tambun) is in operation. Our capacity increases with the new factory and then there is room to produce diesel.

Beyond 2015, would Maruti and Suzuki continue to look to Fiat for their diesel engine needs?
